MERIDIAN —     Two recent traffic stops have culminated in getting a large amount of illegal drugs and guns off the streets and led to the arrest of two people.

Meridian Police Department Chief James Lee said Friday afternoon officers with the department's Direct Response Action Team (DART) and the Narcotics Division have been ramping up efforts to counter drug trafficking in Meridian.

"We have instituted new assignment zones for officers to concentrate their patrols and actions," Lee said. "As you can see we are already seeing good results from this strategy."

At about 1:30 p.m. Friday, Lee said a DART officer patrolling in the Highland Park area conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by a woman. The officer was able to get permission to search the vehicle and uncovered a treasure trove of various illegal narcotics, Lee said.

Among the narcotics seized were hydrocodone, ecstasy, Xanax, Serquile and liquid MDMA. In all, Lee said there were 965 pills confiscated from the vehicle. Lee said there was also a .380 semi-automatic handgun and a large knife collected during the search. Lee said the woman, who was said to have been from out of state, was in custody pending formal charges that had not been filed by early Friday evening.

Lee said the street value of the haul was estimated by narcotics agents to be about $15,000.

In another drug bust that occurred Thursday evening, Lee said agents with the department's Narcotics Division took one man into custody for possession of cocaine and marijuana. Lee said the cocaine weighed five-tenths of a gram.

Lee said at about 5:30 p.m. a traffic stop was executed in the area of 34th Avenue and 22nd Street. Upon getting permission to search the vehicle, Lee said agents discovered the illegal narcotics. Lee said the investigation is ongoing and charges against the suspect have not been filed as of Friday evening.
