Mississippians to receive Legion of Honor

MERIDIAN —     JACKSON, Miss. — Eleven Mississippi veterans will receive the French Legion Honor during a ceremony Sept. 24 in Jackson.

    The Consul General of France in Atlanta, Denis Barbet, will travel be on hand for ceremony at 2:30 p.m. at the Old Capitol Museum in Jackson.

    The Legion of Honor recognizes contributions and acts of bravery of American service members during the liberation of France. It is France's highest military honor.

    The Mississippians to be honored are:

    • Jack Carver from Belzoni (Tech Sgt., 441st Troop Carrier Group, 302nd Squadron)

    • William S. Fuller from Vicksburg (Staff Sgt., 281st Engineer Combat Battalion)

    • Edsol C. Wells from Lauderdale (Staff Sgt., 394th Bomb GP, 9th Air Force)

    • Thomas H. Creekmore from Ocean Springs (Sgt., 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division)

    • William W. Correll from Madison (Pfc., 398th Infantry Regiment, 100th Division)

    • Joseph J. Coscia from Southaven (Pfc., Company A, 319th Infantry Regiment)

    • Joseph R. Johnson from Columbus (Pfc., Battery D, 551st Antiaircraft Artillery, Automatic Weapons Battalion)

    • James F. Robinson from Aberdeen (Pfc., 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division)

    • Harry C. Quinn from Madison, MS (Pvt., 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Division)

    • Malcolm L. Jones from Hazlehurst, MS (Gunners Mate 2nd Class, USS Raven AM 55)

    In addition, Mrs. Joyce Perkins will accept the insignia on behalf of her late brother, Gerald M. Campbell from Gulfport (Gunners Mate 3rd Class, Amphibious Force, USS LST 229).
