State authorities raid suspected gambling locations

MERIDIAN —     Several locations in Meridian were targeted Thursday by authorities with the Mississippi State Gaming Commission and agents with the FBI.

Betty's Rendezvous, located at 1600 Fourth Street, was one location the agents entered to remove suspected illegal gambling machines. According to a patron of the bar who wished not to be identified, there were two machines inside the business at the time of the raid.

Ed Wong, director of the Intelligence Division of the Mississippi State Gaming Commission, said he couldn't comment on the extent of the operations nor who was targeted.

"The operation and investigation is ongoing and we are not going to be able to say anything because there is still the judicial side of the cases that has to be resolved," Wong said Thursday afternoon. "All of this still has to go through the court process."

Two officers with the MSGC were inside Betty's Rendezvous for quite some time, coming out periodically with paperwork and going inside with a dolly to remove the machines.

There was no information available as to the other locations within Meridian that were part of the operation.
