Sheriff's department searching for suspects

MERIDIAN — Authorities with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department narrowly missed getting handcuffs on one burglary suspect Tuesday afternoon but did succeed in apprehending a second individual.

LCSD Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun said the subject in custody has not been charged with any offenses yet but is being held pending the outcome of the investigation.

"We have one person and are looking for a second one," Calhoun said. "We are currently trying to locate the second individual."

Shortly after noon, Calhoun said Central Dispatch was contacted by a resident on Zero Road who said her home had been burglarized. When a deputy arrived he determined the suspect or suspects was still in the area.

Calhoun said suspicious vehicle occupied by two woman was stopped on Zero Road near Purvis Road. The two women were questioned and armed with that information the deputy was able to locate two men on Purvis Road.

"When they saw the deputy they fled into the woods," Calhoun said. "That is when we called in for more manpower and some tracking dogs."

One of the suspects was captured soon afterward but the other was able to elude authorities and the tracking dogs. The search was called off around 3:30 p.m.

In an unrelated case, Calhoun said authorities are still trying to locate a man wanted in connection with the attempted armed robbery Sunday of Sam's Mini Mart on Valley Road in which the clerk and the shotgun wielding suspect got into a struggle

Calhoun said it at around 11:30 a.m. a man entered the Sam's mini-mart on Valley Road with a shotgun. Calhoun said an employee grabbed the gun and struggled with the suspect. The men then ended up in the parking lot where Calhoun said the gun fired, hitting the building.

The suspect fled the scene. He is described as a white male, wearing a Halloween mask and was last seen driving away in a black pick up truck on Dr. Brock Road.

If you have any information about this case, you are asked to call Crimestoppers at 601-485-1860.
