Snowden elected to serve on national committee

MERIDIAN —     Local lawmaker Greg Snowden has been elected to serve on the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Executive Committee. Snowden represents District 83,  which includes Lauderdale and Clarke counties, in the House of Representatives.

Lawmakers from around the country elected Snowden to serve on the committee last week at the National Conference of State Legislatures’ (NCSL) 2013 Legislative Summit.

Snowden, a Republican, said one of the good things about the Conference is that it is bipartisan.

"They make a conscious effort to be bipartisan," Snowden said. "They work on nuts and bolts issues. They'll give you research on issues and let you know what other states are doing. They are kind of a go-to organization."

All members of the Mississippi Legislature are automatically members of the conference, which has 7,000 members from all over the country who are state lawmakers. There is an additional 20,000 legislative staff members, he said.

Snowden has been active in the Conference for a couple of years.

"I'm excited about it. I'm honored to serve," Snowden said. "It's been a while since we had somebody from Mississippi on the committee. It's an honor personally and it will be good for the state."

The NCSL Executive Committee is the governing body of the National Conference of State Legislatures. Comprised of 63 elected members, the executive committee drives the organization by supervising and controlling the affairs of the Conference, its committees and publications, as well as deciding the organization’s ultimate positions on matters of public policy.

The Executive Committee meets four times a year to oversee the development and implementation of NCSL policies.

As speaker pro tempore, Snowden holds the second highest office in the Mississippi House of Representatives. In addition to presiding when Speaker Philip Gunn is absent, Snowden chairs the Management Committee, which oversees all business, personnel and financial operations of the House.

He also serves on the Rules Committee, which schedules and controls the flow of legislation, and on the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, which annually prepares the state budget.

“We are pleased to have Rep. Snowden’s expertise on NCSL’s Executive Committee,” said NCSL President and Oregon Senator Bruce Starr. “His participation in NCSL over the years has been instrumental in keeping the organization at the forefront of the crucial issues facing states.”

Representative Tommy Reynolds (D-Charleston) has been a Mississippi delegate of NCSL since 1988.

“The election of Rep. Snowden to the executive committee is an honor for our state to have a House member selected,” Reynolds said. “It helps Mississippi stay in the forefront of issues that affect all the states. Rep. Snowden is very intelligent and will do a great job in this position.”

The National Conference of State Legislatures provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues.
