Event to benefit two LCSD cancer patients

MERIDIAN —     When law enforcement officers and other emergency response agencies talk about their co-workers, they normally refer to them as family.

In that vein, members of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department are holding an event to help with the medical costs of two of their family members who are incurring a lot of debt while dealing with cancer treatments.

"We are like a family especially when you talk about the way we support each other," said Andy Hatcher, a deputy with the LCSD and one of the event organizers. "These two men are tough but so is cancer so we are here to help and support them any way we can."

The Rivers and Robinson Car Show and Vehicle Extravaganza will be held August 24 with proceeds going to the rising bills incurred by Dep. Hubert "Sarge" Rivers and Dep. Sgt. Thomas Robinson, Hatcher said. The event will be held at Northeast Park located at 7300 Newell Road off Highway 39 North. It will begin at 9 a.m. and last until the last band stops playing.

"We will have live music, dunking booths, raffles and many more activities," Hatcher said. "We are going all out for these two great guys and I hope the public shows up to help us support them and their families."

There will be fire department demonstrations, vehicle extrication competitions by emergency responders and many more unique activities, Hatcher said.

And if you really want to test your throwing arm, an assortment of targets, ranging from Sheriff Billy Sollie to Lauderdale County Fire Service Coordinator Allan Dover, Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency Director David Sharp and Supervisor Kyle Rutledge will be in the hot seat of the dunking booth.

Several raffles will be held including one that will feature a Weatherby Vanguard .270 rifle with scope.

"Just that list of people that will be in the dunking booth should be enough to bring out a great many people," Hatcher said with a smile. "We will have fun and hopefully raise a lot of money for these two men."
