Gunfire erupts in early morning incident

MERIDIAN —     A man who kicked down the front door of a home early Friday morning was met with a fusillade of bullets by the residents inside.

Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun said miraculously no one was hit by the gunfire and the intruder escaped.

"The intruder came through the door firing and the woman and man inside returned fire," Calhoun said. "I'm not quite sure at the total number of shots fired but it was really something that so many shots were fired and no one was hit."

Calhoun categorized the shooting as a targeted incident, meaning the intruder went to the residence in an attempt to shoot one or both of the occupants. Calhoun said investigators were still trying to determine the exact motive.

Calhoun said at about 1 a.m. Friday the intruder kicked down the front door of the mobile home located in the 2300 block of Whitaker Road. Calhoun said the intruder fired first and the man and woman inside the trailer returned fire. The intruder then fled in a vehicle but no description of the vehicle was given.

Calhoun said the intruder was described as a young black man, maybe even a teenager, who stands about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs around 165 pounds. The suspect was wearing a red bandana over his face and a dark colored jacket with a hood.

Calhoun said investigators and deputies spent a good bit of time collecting all the physical evidence at the residence.

If anyone has information pertaining to this incident they are urged to call Crime Stoppers at 601-485-1860.
