Thunder coming to Battlefield Raceway

MERIDIAN —     Fireworks will not only be coming off the drag strip Saturday night at Battlefield Raceway north of Collinsville but also from the air.

In one of the biggest events of the year, Billy Ethridge, track owner, says for the first time ever four-wheelers will be the feature attraction on the one-eighth mile track.

"We've never had four-wheeler drag races and it is something I think the people will enjoy," says Ethridge. "These machines have wheeler bars and can cover the 660 feet in about five seconds. That is moving, I don't care what you are driving or riding."

The event is called the Planet Asphalt ATV/Bike Drag Shoot-out. Motorcycles will also be a featured event for the track. All events will be done by classes. Those classes include the ATV 2-stroke, ATV 4-stroke, ATV stock frame, ATV stock cylinders, open class bike, open class ATV, fastest ATV kids (12-15), bracket class ATV and bike and junior dragsters.

A fireworks show will light up the night sky adding an extra treat for the race fans, says Ethridge.

"We are pulling out all the stops because this is our last event of the year," he says. "We will have the final points race for the Bracket Program beginning in the morning so there will be a great many people coming to the track to prove so many things."

Ethridge says so far he is expecting about 50 four-wheeler racers to converge on the track. In addition to the four-wheelers, the Grudge/T&T racing will also be held to determine yearly points leaders and honors.

Ethridge says ATV dragsters from Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Indiana, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi are expected to show their four-wheeling thunder and

Admission is $15 per person and the gates open at 9 a.m. with 12 and under getting in free. Trophies for all classes will be awarded. For more information on the event, visit
