MCC and UWA reach transfer agreement

MERIDIAN —     In what officials described as a "win, win, win," situation, Meridian Community College and the University of West Alabama formally entered into an transfer agreement Thursday that they said will benefit not only the educational institutions but also their students.

MCC President Dr. Scott Elliott and UWA President Dr. Richard Holland signed a memorandum of agreement between the University of West Alabama and Meridian Community College that allows students to transfer coursework from the University of West Alabama to Meridian Community College to complete an associate in arts degree.

Specifically, the agreement assists students who earned credits to earn the associate degree, and then pursue their education at UWA, to transfer their credits earned at UWA to MCC through an articulation agreement in order to complete the associate in arts degree.

To be eligible, the student must transfer to UWA from MCC; the student's transcript must reflect at least 54 hours of academic credit completed at MCC; and the student must be in good academic standing at both UWA and MCC.

Olivier Charles, director of admissions at the University of West Alabama, said that in the university's research, "we found that a student with an associate degree has a 10 percent higher chance of retention."

Elliott said the agreement was good for all - especially for the student.

"It demonstrates you have attained certain competencies ... it demonstrates to the employer that this person finished what they started," Elliott said.

Holland said UWA and MCC have had a long working relationship within the education realm and in economic development.

"We're glad to be a partner and appreciate all of the work," Holland said.
