The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is investigating the Thursday shooting of an inmate on work release from the Choctaw County Sheriff's Office Jail.
The inmate, who has not been officially identified, was found shot in a pickup truck in the Mt. Sterling Community east of Butler, Ala., officials said. He later died at a Meridian hospital.
"Because he was one of our inmates, we are not conducting the investigation," Choctaw County Sheriff Tom Abate said. "The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is handling the investigation."
Abate said the man's wound was "not self-inflicted."
"It is capital murder," Abate said.
A spokesperson for the Alabama Bureau of Investigations said last Friday that the agency will not be releasing any information about the investigation.
The inmate was serving out his sentence at the jail, but was out on work release last Thursday at the time of the shooting, Abate said. Work release inmates are allowed to leave jail to go to work and return to the jail after their work shift is over.
The charge on which the shooting victim was incarcerated has not been released.
