Walking trail to highlight historic sites

MERIDIAN — Ribbon cutting slated for Monday

Special to The Star

Poplar Springs Historic Community Association is proud to announce its most recent project – an approximately one mile long loop walking trail highlighting some of the historic sites along Poplar Springs Drive in the Poplar Springs Historic District.

The tour begins at the historic marker located at the intersection of 24th Avenue and Poplar Springs Drive (The Point). There will be a ribbon cutting held on Monday at 3:30 pm. The community is invited to see the new trail and walk the mile long loop together, as well as learn about the exciting history of the Poplar Springs Drive Historic District.

The trail includes information on several historic residences: the Wright Home, the Butler Home, the Grant Home and the former site of the Matty Hersee Hospital.

The tour information is accessible through a mobile app on the Appcatch Market. It is compatible with both iPhone and Android operating systems, and can also be viewed online for those without smartphones. Just scan the QR code or visit PSHCA website ( Follow the instructions to install on a smartphone or view online.

The tour was researched and created by Girl Scout Kate Johnson from Troop 6403 for her Gold Award – the Girl Scout equivalent of the Eagle Scout rank.     The project was first approved by the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi Council in December of 2012, and the final installation was completed in March of 2014, with the assistance of Venture Crew 70 of Choctaw Area Council. Crucial to the success of the project was the generous donation by Innovative Fabrications of the signage for the walking trail, the assistance of Ms. Judith Johnson in procuring photographs for the app, and the support of those Poplar Springs Historic Community Association members who donated towards the project.
