Prison guard arrested

MERIDIAN —     Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department authorities arrested an East Mississippi Correctional Facility guard, who is accused of bringing contraband into the prison.

Sheriff Billy Sollie said Friday that Deshaun Teriel Carter, 31, of Meridian, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility. Carter, who was arrested Wednesday, was released Friday on a $20,000 bond.

Sollie said the case was brought to the attention of the LCSD investigators when 8 1/2 ounces of marijuana and bundled up hacksaw blades were found in the rental car Carter was reportedly using. The discovery was made by employees of a local company after they towed the car because Carter could not pay the bill, Sollie said. When the rental car employees were going through the vehicle to clean it they found the contraband, officials said.

They notified sheriff's investigators who then took over the case, along with agents of the East Mississippi Drug Task Force.

Sollie said Carter was brought in for questioning and as a result of the investigation was charged with the offense. Sollie said Carter was a lieutenant at the prison. Carter has since been fired from his position at the prison.
