Disc golf course now open

MERIDIAN —    Apparently there is a rapidly growing subculture of people who absolutely love disc golf.

    Who knew?

Friday afternoon the ribbon was cut on the new nine hole disc golf course in Highland Park. City officials trumpeted the opening as the latest example of the park coming back to its former self as a family oriented area to enjoy the outdoors and exercise.

"When I was a child, Highland Park was a huge part of my life and later of my children's lives," said Ward 3 Councilwoman Barbara Henson. "In the previous years the park has not been that way. I believe this and the other improvements on the way will bring back the glory of the park."

The course represents a joint effort between members of the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors, the City of Meridian, the Lauderdale County Board of Tourism and the East Mississippi Disc Golf Club. Mark Naylor, Meridian Parks and Recreation director, said the county purchased the equipment totaling $2,800.     Naylor said the city purchased the posts, concrete and labor to install all the components, while the tourism board bought the discs. Naylor said the disc club helped in the design and layout of the course.

"It's a wonderful addition to the park," Naylor said. "It will bring a group of patrons to the park to enjoy a very challenging, yet fun outdoor exercise for all levels of players."

Naylor said the course was completed several weeks ago and that there have already been several people who have played a round. He said Saturday is the official first day of the course and that everyone is invited out to try their hand at this challenging sport.
