Chase ends in arrest

MERIDIAN —     Three local law enforcement agencies were part of a lengthy foot chase Wednesday morning as they pursued a rape suspect.

Meridian Police Department Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said officers apprehended 18-year-old Jeffrey Taylor, of 2432 36th Place in Meridian, who was charged with statutory rape. Taylor has been placed on $50,000 bond and is awaiting further action in this case.

Harper said at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, Meridian Police Department officers went to a residence on Highway 45 North, north of Marion, to serve a warrant on the statutory rape charge. When officers approached the residence, Harper said Taylor fled on foot.

Minutes later, officers from the Marion Police Department and deputies with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department joined the pursuit. After a short period, Taylor was located and taken into custody without further incident.

The assault charge stemmed from an incident that reportedly occurred on March 31 of this year. Harper said Taylor and victim knew each other before the incident.
