Summit to address mental health in children

MERIDIAN —     May is Mental Health Awareness Month and this week is Mental Health Awareness Week.

In response to these two calendar events, NFusionX, along with Weems Community Mental Health Center and Meridian Community College, will conduct a summit today from 6-8 p.m. at the MCC Multi-purpose Building on Highway 19 North in an attempt to address mental health issues in children. Adetura Taylor, who is the Intensive Care Coordinator for NFusionX, said a panel of experts, headed by nationally recognized professional trainer and motivational speaker Marc Fomby, will hold a panel discussion. The summit is free and the public is urged to attend.

"Fomby's message and presentation is a powerful one," Taylor said. "He looks at messages of at-risk behavior in contemporary music including slang and code words many of us don't know."

Fomby's presentation is titled, "The Message in the Music."

Among the other panelists will be Dr. Lee Lee Marlow and Dr. Lynn Hogan of Weems, Lauderdale County Juvenile Court Judge Veldore Young, Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department Dep. Robby McClure, and Elizabeth Hamilton and Devon Pruitt from NFusionX.

NFusionX works with youth and young adults and their families to assist them in meeting needs related to education, employment, housing and wellness as well as social needs. The goal is to enhance the working relationship between community partners and agencies.

"We provide a safe environment to work on social skills, educational supports, cultural enrichment, mental wellness, employment skills and much more," Taylor said. "This is done through partnerships with families and community members."

NFusionX is an initiative funded through a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The program is funded in part by grants from the Mississippi Department of Mental Health.

"We work on empowering young adults, inspiring families, and creating new communities," Taylor said.
