NEC president tours Mississippi clubs

MERIDIAN —          Don Wright, president of the National Exchange Club, America’s premiere service club, will visit several Mississippi Exchange Clubs, Sept. 16-19.

    He will visit Meridian on Sept. 17.

         Wright, of Tennessee, leads 700 clubs with more than 20,000 members throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

         The Mississippi District consists of 29 clubs with more than 650 members, all working to improve their communities through programs in community service, Americanism, youth and child abuse prevention.

         On Sept. 16, Wright will attend the Exchange Club of Vicksburg noon meeting at Shoney’s Restaurant. Afterwards he expects to visit the Exchange Club of Vicksburg Child Abuse Prevention Center, 3527 Manor Drive, Suite F.

         At 6:30 p.m. that same day, Wright will be the speaker at a combined meeting of the Exchange Club of North Jackson and Exchange of Northwoods at Cool Water Café, 1011 Lake Harbour Drive., Ridgeland.

         Wright will be the guest speaker the Exchange Club Meridian at noon Sept. 17 at Ryan’s Family Streak House, 207 South Frontage Road. Later that day, he will be the speaker at 6:30 p.m. at the Exchange Club House, 197 Cleary Road, in Richland.

         On Sept. 18, Wright will be the guest of the Batesville Exchange Club for breakfast at 7 a.m. at Batesville Church of Christ, 120 Eureka St. He will then meet with the Exchange Club of Clarksdale at noon at Western Hibachi Buffet, 707 S. State St.

     Wright will end his state tour by attending the noon meeting of the Exchange Club of Oxford at Oxford University Club, 300 Old Highway 7 North.

    Wright was installed as the president of the National Exchange Club in July 2013 at the national convention in Greensboro, N.C. He is a member of the Noon Exchange Club of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and has served in a variety of capacities, including Regional 6 Vice President of which Mississippi is a part.

        Don is sole proprietor of Billboard Consultants, an outdoor advertising space management service. He has spent his entire life in the billboard business and has been associated with firms in Mobile, Ala.; Albany, Ga.; Chicago, Ill.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Nashville and Murfreesboro, Tenn.

         Don attended the University of South Alabama in Mobile and Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. He and his wife, Melissa (the chief financial officer for the city of Murfreesboro), have two children and three grandchildren.

    The National Exchange Club was founded in 1911 in Detroit by business leaders who wanted to “exchange” ideas on making their community better, the Exchange Club moved its headquarters to Toledo in 1917.

         Its core values – Family, Community and Country are held by each Exchange member with pride and commitment. For over 100 years, Exchange Club volunteer efforts have supported the needs of the country and of local communities, making it the country’s oldest American service organization operating exclusively in this country.

         Exchange sponsors activities designed to benefit, award and develop our nation’s youth, promote crime prevention, serve senior citizens and recognize military and public safety service providers. Exchange also promotes Americanism programs and its national project is the prevention of child abuse.

         Mississippians have had a tremendous impact on the national organization with four serving as national presidents, including Thomas Bailey, a former state governor. Bailey was the author of the organizations “Covenant of Service.” Dr. Edward R. North Jr. of Jackson was responsible for the National Exchange Club program of service in prevention of child abuse.
