Free pancakes for veterans

MERIDIAN — By Brian Livingston

Military service members and veterans of America's armed forces gathered Thursday morning at St. Patrick's School to enjoy a pancake breakfast in their honor.

Susannah Millar, president of the Parent School Association for St. Patrick's said this is the first year of the event but it will likely not be the last.

"The students are always looking for ways to say 'thank you' to the veterans and we have a lot of children that go to school here whose parents are in the military so this just seems natural," Millar said. "The PSA is happy to be a part of this."

US Navy Commander Justin Bates was in line with his three boys as each of them received their plates with pancakes and sausage. He said this was a wonderful event and commented the school was always good about doing special things.

"The school is always talking about service to others and whenever you join America's armed forces that is what you are doing so the lessons there are important and not lost on the students," said Bates, who is an instructor at NAS Meridian. "This is good for the kids to see."

The breakfast followed a Veteran's Day mass held at St. Patrick's.
