Man who led police on high speed chase fatally shot

MERIDIAN —     A man who police said pointed a gun at officers after leading them on a high speed chase Thursday night was fatally shot.

    According to a Meridian Police Department press press release, police attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle being driven erratically on Frontage Road.

    Here is what the press release states:

    "The driver of the vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit ensued onto Interstate 20/59 traveling south into North Clarke County. The driver lost control of his vehicle spinning out then regained control and drove toward a Meridian police vehicle hitting it head on.  

    "The driver then exited his vehicle and pointed a gun at the officers. After refusing to drop the gun the suspect was shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.  No officers were injured.  

    "The shooting is under investigation by Mississippi Highway Patrol, Clarke County Sheriff Department, and Meridian Police Department. "

     The time of the shooting and identity of the man who was shot has not yet been released.
