Burglary stopped by phone call

MERIDIAN —     A Meridian resident did the simplest, easiest thing to stop crime.

    They made a phone call.

Meridian Police Department officers apprehended two male juveniles shortly after noon Saturday after a resident called 911 Emergency Dispatch to report an alleged burglary in progress. This is exactly the kind of action Meridian Mayor Percy Bland and MPD Chief James Lee are trumpeting on the threshold of the MPD's and the City of Meridian's crime stopping campaign, "See Something, Say Something."

"We are trying to get the public to help us, help them," Lee said recently.

Judging from MPD reports Saturday, one resident did a great deal in helping both the police and their neighbors in preventing this alleged incident.

At noon, 911 Emergency Dispatch was notified by the resident they believed to be seeing a burglary in progress in the 3300 block of 27th Avenue. Three minutes later several police units were on the scene and in the immediate area looking for suspects.

The caller had given the dispatcher a good physical description of the two subjects and this information was relayed to officers. One of the first officers on the scene observed two individuals coming out of a wooded area on 29th Avenue and he stopped to conduct a field interview.

Working off the interview of the two subjects and the information provided by the caller, the officer entered the woods and conducted a search. Minutes later the officer found two hoodies matching the description given by the caller that had been discarded.

Other officers, who did a survey of the home thought to have been targeted by the alleged burglars, found where entry had not been successful but physical evidence at the home suggested attempts were made to enter the home.     The two juveniles were taken into custody for further questioning.
