GILBERTOWN, Ala. —     The Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition of Lauderdale and Newton Counties is reminding area smokers that Thursday is the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout day across the United States.

Every year on the third Thursday of November, smokers are encouraged to kick their smoking habit for 24 hours in the hope that they will consider quitting for good.

"There is plenty of help available for Mississippians who want to stop smoking permanently," said Sabrina Wilson, director of the Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition of Lauderdale and Newton Counties. "If you want to quit using tobacco, contact the Mississippi Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW to receive free counseling and medications, such as nicotine patches or gum."

She suggested that those who make the decision to quit let their friends, family and coworkers know, and ask them for their support and understanding.
