High number of burglaries reported in county

MERIDIAN —     A series of seven reported burglaries in the Lauderdale County area Sunday has astounded officials with the sheriff's department.

"This is extremely unusual, I've never remembered anything like this ever happening," said Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department.

Typically, burglaries and thefts occur during the daytime, Monday through Friday.

"That's when people are at work," Calhoun said. "And that's when these thieves are out riding around and stealing from people's homes."

But Sunday proved to be the chosen day of thievery. The chief deputy said it was highly unusual to have that many burglaries on one day, particularly Sunday.

"Two with certainty happened during the time frame when people were gone to church and came home to find their home burglarized," he said.

Many of the incidents happened in the Russell and Toomsuba communities.

Officials with the sheriff's department continue to investigate the burglaries.

"We've recovered evidence at some of the scenes that we believe will be helpful," Calhoun said.

Anyone with information about any of the burglaries should call the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department at (601) 482-9806 or CrimeStoppers at (601) 485-1860.
