The Al Brown All Stars rock downtown

MERIDIAN —     The Al Brown All Stars perform at Dumont Plaza in downtown Meridian today from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for the third of five Downtown After 5 Alive concerts.

"It's going to be a non-stop show for two and a-half hours," Brown said Wednesday.

Many musicians were invited to be a part of the All Star performance.

"I want to show that music and musicians are a labor force," Brown said. He wants to show the diversity among musicians and highlight how the musical community works together as a whole.

"These are all professional musicians for hire," Brown said.

Among the musicians performing with Brown will be Tony Pasko, whose second release for Down Boy Records is available today.

The 12-song instrumental holiday CD is called "Band of Elves." The cover of the disc features Pasko's artwork — he and his band in the reflection of a Christmas ornament. It is reminiscent of the album cover for Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced" (1967).

Pasko said the collection of songs is fun and light with each of the songs done in a different style. You'll hear "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" in the style of Santana, "Little Drummer Boy" in the style of Jimi Hendrix and his Band of Gypsies, a bluegrass version of "Jingle Bells," and "Auld Lang Syne" as Guns N' Roses might cover it.

"It opens with "Mele Kalikimaka." It's in a style I call Don Ho meets Eddie Van Halen," Pasko said. “This project started out as a dare from my wife betting me I couldn’t play traditional Christmas songs in 12 different styles of music."

Pasko said he will have copies of the CD available at tonight's concert. Also visit www.tonypasko.com. The CD is $10.

There is no admission for the fall concert series, which is presented by Meridian Main Street and the Meridian/Lauderdale County Tourism Bureau. Family activities also will be set up and food and beverages will be available.
