Republican Harper wins 3rd District

JACKSON (AP) — Republican Gregg Harper of Pearl has won the race for Mississippi’s 3rd District, defeating Democrat Joel Gill of Pickens.

Harper will represent the seat in east Mississippi that’s been held by Republican Chip Pickering for the last 12 years. Pickering announced he wouldn’t run for re-election.

Harper is a former Rankin County Republican chairman and longtime GOP volunteer. He was favored to win as Gill had run a low-key campaign.

Gill is a cattle buyer and seller. He’s also an alderman in the town of Pickens, which is not in the 3rd District. The law does not require candidates to live in the congressional district where they’re running.
