Two incumbents on the Meridian City Council were defeated in Tuesday night's primary runoffs.
Kenneth Dustin Markham defeated incumbent Mary A.B. Perry in the race for the Ward Two council seat. Given that there is no Republican challenger in the June 4 general election, Markham will be seated on the new council that takes office in July.
Markham garnered 464 votes to Perry's 174 votes, according to unofficial results released Tuesday night.
"I wish Mr. Markham well," Perry said. "I would like to thank all of those persons who have supported me while I held the council seat. It was a pleasure serving and if there is anything I can do to help Meridian, I will do that."
Markham could not be reached for comment.
Longtime Ward Four council member Jesse E. Palmer lost his bid for reelection, defeated by Democratic challenger Kim Houston.
"Somebody had to win," Palmer said. "I congratulate Kim on the hard work she did to get ready for the campaign. There is no sour grapes."
Houston beat Palmer with 433 votes to 197 votes and will face independent challenger Thomas Everett Hopson in the general election for the Ward Four seat.
"We are excited right now and looking forward to the opportunity to serve," Houston said. "We appreciate the run Mr. Palmer gave and I hope to sit at his feet and learn some things from him."
For now, however, Houston said she is looking forward to the June 4 general election.
"We do have one more river to cross," Houston said.
Wards Two and Four council were the only elections on Tuesday's runoff ballot.
Other contested council seats in the June general election include Ward One, where Republican incumbent George M. Thomas faces opposition from Democrat Martin M. Jack.
In Ward Five, Republican incumbent Bobby Smith was defeated by challenger Randy Hammon in the May 7 primary election. Hammon will face Democrat John Harris in the general election.
Republican incumbent in Ward Three, Barbara Henson was unopposed by either party.
