LCSD probing kidnapping and rape

MERIDIAN —     Investigators with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department are working a case involving the alleged kidnapping and rape of a woman.

LCSD Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun said on Wednesday Pearl Police Department authorities contacted investigators with the LCSD about a woman who was claiming to have been kidnapped and raped by a truck driver. Calhoun said investigators spent much of Thursday in Pearl interviewing the woman.

Calhoun said the woman told investigators she was traveling through Alabama with her boyfriend when the two of them got into a domestic altercation at a truck stop. The woman said a truck driver intervened and the boyfriend left. The woman said the trucker offered to give her a ride and she accepted.

"She told investigators that once they got into Lauderdale County on Interstate 20 the trucker pulled over into the rest area at Toomsuba and that is when she said he raped her," Calhoun said.

Calhoun said the truck driver let the woman out in Pearl and that is when she notified the Pearl Police Department. The woman was taken to University Medical Center in Jackson for medical attention.

"We have a lead on a suspect and we are trying to locate him now," Calhoun said.
