Construction to begin Monday on I-20/59

MERIDIAN —     The Mississippi Department of Transportation will begin work Monday to widen the railroad bridge just west of the U.S. Highway 80 Lost Gap interchange.

The work will also include lengthening the acceleration lane for the Lost Gap interchange ramp on the westbound side of Interstate 20/Interstate 59 in Lauderdale County.

Delays can be expected as MDOT closes the outside lane of Interstate 20 westbound during the first phase of construction, according to a press release.  Westbound on-ramp traffic traveling from the Lost Gap interchange should be prepared to either yield to oncoming traffic or stop, if necessary, to enter the one through lane of interstate traffic.

Once completed, the inside lane will be closed and the road shoulder widened.

The work is slated for completion by July 23.

The contractor for the project is Joe McGee Construction Company of Lake, Miss. The project is estimated to cost more about $3 million.

MDOT advises motorists to slow down, pay attention to roadway messages, use caution and always be aware of workers on the roadway while traveling through the work zones.
