Kemper County authorities said a woman who was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon has now been charged in the kidnapping of a 6-year-old girl.
Kemper County Sheriff James Moore said Jessie Pollard, 54, of North Port, Ala., was charged in federal court Thursday afternoon.
Pollard was taken into custody around 4 p.m. Wednesday in connection with the Tuesday afternoon kidnapping of Jashayla Hopson, who was taken around 1:45 p.m. from East Kemper County Elementary School in Scooba.
Moore said Pollard is being held without bond in the federal lockup in Jackson.
Jashayla was found on Burrage Road in Lauderdale County Wednesday afternoon after the girl walked up to a home and knocked on the door. The occupant of the home recognized the girl from news reports and an Amber Alert that was issued by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Jashayla was taken to a Meridian hospital where she was checked out by medical personnel and reunited with her parents.
Based on information obtained Wednesday, FBI, MBI and Kemper County authorities were able to locate Pollard and take her into custody.
For 24 hours after the abduction, FBI, MBI and Kemper County authorities were working from the East Mississippi Community College campus in Scooba in trying to locate the missing girl.
