Three students injured in crash

MERIDIAN —     Three Clarkdale High School students were injured early Thursday morning in a one-vehicle crash on Zero Road.

According to Maj. John Calhoun, commander of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department's Patrol Division, the accident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. just north of the Mt. Horeb intersection on Zero Road. Calhoun said two of the 17-year-old boys were transported to Meridian hospital emergency rooms while a third, the driver, was airlifted to Jackson with severe head injuries. Calhoun said Thursday afternoon the condition of the airlifted teen was not immediately known.

Calhoun said preliminary crash investigation reports seemed to indicate the vehicle the three boys were traveling in, a Ford Explorer, left the roadway and then through overcorrection by the driver, began to flip. Two of the boys, the driver and one of the passengers, was ejected from the vehicle while the second passenger was partially ejected.

Calhoun said preliminary reports seemed to indicate none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
