As the smell of hamburgers cooking wafted through the air, a smiling Darrion Goudy tended the grill.
Goudy, a Lauderdale County native who grew up near Southeast Lauderdale School, was enjoying the weather Saturday as he cooked for an outdoor event.
Cooking is a hobby for Goudy, who has cooked for events for about 15 years. He cooks everything from burgers and hot dogs to whole hogs.
"We tailgate every home game at Southern Miss.," Goudy said. "When I retire I probably will be a cook."
Goudy and his brother have a grass-cutting business and he works two other part-time jobs as well.
"I'm a work-a-holic. Never a dull moment. We cater, we smoke, we grill, we love doing it."
Goudy also coaches peewee football and has done so for many years.
"It's good getting to see little kids grow up and change, seeing them develop into young men and good citizens for our community and our state," Goudy said. "My father passed when I was a young kid and I had men of the community to help me so I just felt that this would be a way to give back. I like it. Coaching is a passion of mine. I've always liked working with kids."
A love of football is in the family. Two of his sons play football at USM, he said.
