Property values ready for viewing

MERIDIAN —     As property owners know, the property taxes they are charged on their homes, land and businesses are based on the property's value. The value can go up, down or remain the same from one year to the next.

With property assessments recently completed for Lauderdale County, officials are encouraging property owners to take the time to find out what their assessments are now rather than waiting until December when they get their tax bills.

There is a means of appeal if a property owner objects to the property's assessed value, according to Joe McCraney, county administrator.

"If you look at your value and you think that there is a discrepancy there, then you can go by the Chancery Clerk's office, pick up a form, fill  it out and then you are eligible to come and appeal it to the Board of Supervisors," McCraney said.

Dates and times of appeals will be set later, when the board knows how many people are planning to appeal, McCraney said.

The tax rolls are available for public viewing in the  Chancery Clerk's Office. The information is also online at the county's website at:  www.lauderdalecounty.org

If a property owner wishes to appeal the assessment, they may do so in writing by Aug. 5 at 1 p.m.  Appeals forms are located in the Chancery Clerk's Office, which is where property owners can file them.
