MERIDIAN —     A man was seriously injured in an auto accident on Highway 45 just before noon on Wednesday, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

A Honda Accord on Highway 45 in the northbound lane headed just south of the 145 intersection left the road, hit trees and overturned, according to Cpl. Andy West, spokesperson for the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

The name of the driver, who was alone in the vehicle at the time, has not been released. He was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson, West said.

MHP received the call at 11:45 a.m., but aren't sure exactly what time the accident happened, West said.  A passerby noticed the overturned vehicle, pulled over and checked to see if anyone was inside the vehicle. He found the man and called for help.

"It appears the wreck had occurred some time before that," West said. "He was still in the vehicle and he was extricated by the fire department."

The wreck happened not far from Evangel Temple on Highway 45, West said.
