Feds close down another Gordon business

MERIDIAN —     Agents with the IRS and the U.S. Attorney's Office shut down a Meridian business Wednesday, taking control of the property as part of an ongoing probe into the business dealings of the Bill Gordon family in Meridian.

Bill Ready Jr., who is representing Dennis Gordon, Bill Gordon's son, said Thursday afternoon the federal authorities closed down the Sports Connection located at Fifth Street and 46th Avenue.

"The first I heard about it was when I received some electronic notices of the operation from the U.S. Attorney's Office late Wednesday," Ready said. "I've contacted the U.S. Attorney's Office to inquire about the seizures."

Ready said he assumes the U.S. Attorney has taken the position that there was some sort of illegal activity going on at the location and that is what prompted the closure."

In January, several of Bill Gordon's businesses and his home were raided by FBI and IRS agents. Bill Ready Sr., who represents Bill Gordon, said in January businesses owned by Bill Gordon targeted in the raid include the New Place Corner Bar, Bill Gordon's Barber Shop, the Log Cabin Bar on Fifth Street, Cameron's Deli on Fifth Street, the Sidetrack Lounge in Whynot, and a store on Highway 11 and 80 in Russell.

Ready Sr. said among the items seized were financial records and computers. Ready Sr. also said in January the IRS seized financial records of Gordon's other son, Wayne Gordon.

    No charges have been filed.

"It is my opinion that the IRS has been told that Bill is some kind of gigantic gambler," Ready Sr. said. "It ain't true. It is also my opinion that someone got aggravated at Bill for some reason and called the IRS. That is why I believe the IRS is in error in doing this."
