MPD searching for suspect

MERIDIAN —     Authorities with the Meridian Police Department are searching for an armed robbery suspect while another recovers in a local hospital after a gun battle with a convenience store clerk erupted Sunday night.

MPD Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the the MPD's Criminal Investigation Division, said Monday that at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday two black men who were armed with handguns and had their faces covered with masks entered the Five Points Food Mart location on 14th Street in an attempt to rob the clerk.

Harper said the clerk pulled his own firearm and shots were exchanged between the three inside the store.

Harper said the clerk received a minor grazing wound to his arm while one of the suspects was shot in the hand and the shoulder. Both suspects ran away on foot but officers captured the wounded suspect within minutes after he was found hiding in an apartment in Highway Village Apartments. That suspect is under guard at a local hospital receiving treatment for his non-life threatening wounds and will be charged upon his release, Harper said.

Police continue to search for the second suspect, who is described as standing 5-foot-8-inches tall and wearing a gray hoodie and dark pants.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the robbery attempt is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 601-485-1860.
