MERIDIAN —     Dareadell Terrell Thompson, an eight-year veteran of the Meridian Police Department, was convicted of wire fraud during a trial Tuesday in the Lauderdale County Courthouse.

According to court officials, a jury took only 25 minutes to return with the guilty verdict.

The court hearing centered on Thompson's forging of a justice court judge's and MPD detective's signatures to obtain his wife's phone records and then faxing the subpoena, which constitutes wire fraud.

Thompson was arrested in November 2010 on the charge of mail fraud, according to arrest reports from the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department.

Thompson has been battling the City of Meridian for the past three years over what he termed wrongful termination from the police force. In June of last year a jury returned in favor of the City of Meridian but according to court officials, the state attorney general's office picked up on the wire fraud aspect of the case and decided to take it to trial.

Thompson will be sentenced on March 28 at 1:30 p.m. here in Meridian.
