MERIDIAN —     Mardi Gras will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 2, in downtown Meridian with gumbo, king cakes, parades, and music.

Scheduled for 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Meridian Main Street is hoping to have a large turnout.

Last year 13 teams competed in the Gumbo Cook Off. There were 14 floats in the Krewe of Midas Parade, and 31 participants marched in the Krewe of Barkus Pet Parade according to Debby Delshad, Meridian Main Street program director.

The fee for participants in the Gumbo Cook Off is $25 per team. Gumbo will be cooked on site with judging to be held in the afternoon.

King cakes can be pre-ordered and will be available for pick-up at the event. The last day to order is Jan. 28. Visit the Meridian Main Street Facebook page to order, call (601) 693-7840, or e-mail debby@meridianmainstreet.com. Four flavors are available: traditional; pecan praline; Mississippi mud; and strawberry cheese cake. The cost is $15.

Throughout Meridian Mardi Gras live music will be provided by several bands and artists, including Crash Hamilton and The Stuntmen, Gypsy Carnes, No Requests, and more to be named later.

The Krewe of Barkus Pet Parade will lead the Krewe of Midas Parade, which will start at noon. Participants will be judged on their manner and costume. The entry fee is $10 for the pet parade.

Local food and beverage vendors also will be set up at Dumont Plaza. For more information visit the Meridian Main Street website at www.meridianmainstreet.com, or call (601) 693-7840.
