MERIDIAN —     That Christmas tree that was the centerpiece of family activity last week now has no presents underneath it and it is time to unravel the lights and store the ornaments. For those who bought a real tree, it has to be discarded but what to do with it?

If you live within the city limits of Meridian then the answer is simple, according to Rodney Street, division manager for Southern Waste Disposal.

"Just sit them beside your regular trash and we'll pick it up," Street said.

For county residents, however, getting rid of that tree will be a little bit more extensive. Joey Watkins with Arrow Disposal Service said county residents will have to dispose of the trees themselves because his company does not pick them up.

"I spoke to county officials and they don't take them and neither do we," said Watkins.

Watkins said county residents could carry their trees to a rubbish site like Mosley Inc., located at 1400 Willow Lake Road but that disposal fees would apply.
