Three new aldermen, two incumbents, and the incumbent mayor will be sworn into office this evening in Marion.
The Marion Board of Aldermen will be sworn in at 6 p.m. tonight at First Baptist Church in Marion.
Returning for his third term will be Mayor Elvis Hudson. Returning aldermen Barbara Anthony and Bernice Martin, along with newcomers Ben Langston, Larry Donald Thrash, and Lisa Lindley will be sworn in.
The public is invited. First Baptist is located behind the post office on Dale Drive, which is also U.S. 45.
The Meridian City Council and mayor will be sworn in on Monday at the Temple Theater at 11 a.m.
Mayor-elect Percy Bland, along with three new city council members and two incumbents, will be sworn in.
Taking the oath of office will be George Thomas, Ward 1 incumbent; Barbara Henson, Ward 3 incumbent; and newcomers Kenneth Dustin Markham, Ward 2; Kim Houston, Ward 4; and Randy Hammon, Ward 5.
Bland said he would like to clear up any misunderstanding about the event. The public is invited to the ceremony on Monday. Some people, Bland said, have mistakenly believed that they have to have an invitation.
That is not the case, he said. Some invitations have been sent out to friends, family and supporters who will have reserved seating, but no one is required to have an invitation. The Temple Theater is located at 2320, Eighth Street.
A reception will be held Monday afternoon, 1-3 p.m. on the lawn of City Hall. Bland said. That will give the public a better opportunity to meet and greet the mayor and council, Bland said. Refreshments will be available.
