Authorities with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department had noticed an uptick in the number of burglaries at mini-warehouse storage facilities and in response issued an advisory to storage facility owners to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity.
Apparently Wednesday afternoon, one facility owner noticed something out of order and alerted law enforcement.
LCSD Maj. Casey McElhenney said a husband and wife, David Michael Hughey, 32, and Kristen Hughey, 30, are in custody in the Lauderdale County Jail and could be facing multiple charges of burglary.
McElhenney said on Wednesday afternoon a storage unit facility owner in the Bailey area saw a man and woman running out of a storage unit, jump into a silver Chevrolet and speed away towards the Kemper County line.
The owner called the sheriff's office and the Hugheys were arrested following a chase north on Highway 493, McElhenney said.
"The owner got on the phone to central dispatch and kept the truck in sight until Kemper County and Lauderdale County deputies could catch up," McElhenney said. "There were some items we suspect to have been stolen from the units found in the vehicle."
Authorities were able to catch up to the Hughey's in Kemper County, north of the Kemper County coal plant.
McElhenney said the Hughey's also threw several items out of the window of the truck as they raced up Highway 493. McElhenney said those items that were thrown out of the window are being recovered by investigators.
The couple's 5-year-old son was also in the truck at the time of the incident. He was turned over to a relative, McElhenney said.
McElhenney said it is unclear just how many charges the couple is facing. He said there are several reported incidents involving other storage unit facilities that need to be looked into to determine if the couple had anything to do with them. McElhenney also said authorities from Winston County were in Meridian Thursday to question the couple, who they think may have been responsible for similar incidents in that area.
