Death of woman ruled an accident

MERIDIAN —     The State Coroner's Office in Jackson has ruled the death of Jamie Wilkes, a Meridian woman who was reported missing in March, as accidental due to hypothermia.

Meridian Police Department Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said Wednesday the state coroner's report stated Wilkes died from being stuck in the mud of a pond during a period of time when the temperatures dropped below freezing. Harper said the low temperatures were also due to the wind chill that occurred at that time.

On March 27, MPD officers were called to a pond located on Watters Road off Waterview Drive in Meridian to a report of a body being found. Harper said the owner of the pond had been draining the water out of the pond since September of last year. Harper said a passerby saw something suspicious in the pond and then notified authorities. Harper said the area where the body was found was not under water.

Harper said the body was identified by a family member as that of Wilkes. Her body was half submerged in the mud, according to Harper.

Harper said Wilkes was last seen sometime March 2 in the 900 block of 64th Avenue in Meridian.
