You're invited: Relay for Life at EMCC

MERIDIAN —     SCOOBA – East Mississippi Community College invites the community to its Relay for Life Tuesday.

Teams will walk to raise money for cancer research and awareness from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Sullivan Windham Field, Scooba campus.

“Last year, EMCC was the first community college in the state to hold a Relay for Life event. We had a great turn-out and raised just over $8,000,” event organizer Kate Neely McCarty said.

“Our goal this year is $12,000 and we hope everyone will come out and help us. There will be all kinds of events, games and activities for the community. You can buy tickets as you enter the stadium and use them to get hamburgers at the concessions stand, go on the inflatables – or soak someone in the dunking booth.”

    Other special features include:

    • Concert: The EMCC concert, jazz and rock bands will perform beginning about 5:30 p.m. The concert band will perform American pioneer style music, as well as some Ray Charles and a medley of Earth, Wind and Fire. The jazz band takes the stage next with classic jazz of the 1950s and 60s, as well as a little Stevie Wonder and “Summertime,” from “Porgy and Bess.” The rock band, ROAR!, finishes up the concert with standards like “Superstition,” “Sweet Dreams,” “Mustang Sally” and “Stand by Me.”

    • T-shirts: The theme of this year’s Relay for Life is “Disco Defeats Cancer.” T-shirts featuring a roller-skating, disco-dancing lion will be available for $15.

    • Silent auction: Prizes donated by local businesses will be sold during a silent auction. They include paintings and prints, a free car wash and detail, jewelry, outdoors items like turkey and duck calls and lots more.

    • Ribbons: Ribbons to honor someone fighting cancer, or to remember someone who has passed away, will be available for $10. They will be displayed on the fence around the football field during the event.

All proceeds will be donated to the Kemper County Relay for Life.
