Community Police Academy goes to new format

MERIDIAN —     Citing the difficulty for citizens to commit to a multiple session event, Meridian Mayor Cheri Barry announced Tuesday morning a new, and participant friendly, format for the Community Police Academy.

"This is a scaled down version of the Citizen's Police Academy we conducted last year," said Barry during a news conference inside Meridian City Hall. "We realized how hard it was for participants to come to a 10-week training session."

The academy will be held Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 6 p.m. through 8 p.m. at Union Station on Front Street in Meridian.

The academy, developed and sponsored by officials at the Meridian Police Department, will cover the same topics as in the previous academy, including operations of the patrol, criminal investigation and juvenile divisions of the MPD as well as the administrative functions. Citizens will hear a presentation on each topic and be able to take part in a question and answer period.

"Police departments and the way in which they do their jobs is so misunderstood by citizens," said MPD Acting Chief James Sharpe. "It is our belief that a well informed populace is one that can help us prevent and solve crimes. We know we have trust issues with the public and we are doing all we can to alleviate those issues."

Sharpe said there is no requirement to sign up or register for the session. Just show up and join in on the discussion.
