Local to compete in pageant

MERIDIAN —     With an emphasis on natural beauty and poise, the Little Miss and Mr. Magnolia State Pageant will be held July 27-28 in Vicksburg, with Meridian native Shyann Swanner competing for educational scholarships against more than 200 contestants ages 0-11.

“This pageant is unique because the children do not wear pageant attire or anything fake,” said Shyann’s mother, Michele. “The winners of each division will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship for their future education.

“The Little Miss Magnolia State Pageant was the first pageant I found that offered scholarships to its winners. The possibility of being able to contribute to Shyann’s college education before she even enters preschool was just too good to pass up.”

The competition is founded on the ideal that children should showcase age-appropriate beauty, which translates into church-attire for the formal wear competition, in lieu of glitzy pageant gown.

“The casual wear portion is designed to give us a chance to show more of our contestant’s unique personality and style,” Swanner said.

Twenty-two month old Shyann competed in her first pageant just four months ago, and her positive experience led her mother to entering her into more competitions.

“She loved it! She walked up and down the mall waving and smiling at everyone. That experience encouraged my family and me to continue,” Swanner said.

To help raise funds for competition costs, the Swanner family is hosting a fundraiser sale today and Saturday.

“We will have a large selection of household items, toys, adult clothing, children clothing, and other reasonably priced merchandise, as well as 50 cent raffle tickets which were provided by The Little Miss Magnolia State Pageant,” Swanner said.

The sale will be located at 1043 Sam Lackey Road, and will be held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days.
