Teens hit by gunfire

MERIDIAN —     Two teenagers are recovering from gunshot wounds they suffered Wednesday night.

Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the Meridian Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, said the two victims, an 18-year-old male and a 17-year-old female, were transported to a Meridian hospital emergency room for treatment. Harper said the male teen received a minor grazing wound to the shoulder while the young woman's injury was more serious with a wound to her back. Both victims are expected to make a full recovery.

Harper said the shooting occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on 16th Street next to Highway Village Apartment Complex. Harper said two shots were fired during the incident.

An elderly woman who lives in the area of the shooting said Thursday morning she heard the shots.

"I've gotten used to hearing the shots," said the woman, who declined to give her name. "When I hear the pop, pop, pop, I get down on the floor."

The woman said she wonders what the police are doing about these shootings and added she rarely sees police patrolling the area. About a minute later a police unit was seen turning down the alleyway between The Wesley House at Eighth Avenue and the apartment complex where the shooting took place.

Harper said the two teens were hit by the gunfire as they drove through the area. He said two shots were fired but it was not clear as of Thursday afternoon if the shooter was on foot or in another vehicle. Neither of the victims could give detectives any information on the shooter.

Harper did say police don't believe the incident was a random shooting.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 601-485-1860.
