MERIDIAN —     A motorcycle officer with the Meridian Police Department was seriously injured Wednesday in a crash at a busy Meridian intersection.

MPD Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said that Officer Charles Swain, who is a member of the Patrol Division's Motorcycle Unit, sustained serious injuries when his Harley Davidson cruiser collided with a full size, crew cab truck at about 11 a.m.

Harper said the accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 19 South and Interstate 20. Harper said Swain was traveling north on Highway 19 and the truck was coming off Interstate 20 westbound at Highway 11/80 toward Highway 19 South when the collision occurred.

Officials said Swain suffered broken bones, but is expected to recover. He was listed in serious condition at a Meridian hospital.

Harper said the driver of the truck was not ticketed.

The motorcycle sustained extensive damage to the front area while the truck's crew door on the driver's side was bashed in.

Officials said Swain was responding to a call for service.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
