MCC holds job fair for health education students

MERIDIAN —     Nursing has a history in the Peoples family and Hannah Peoples is going to continue that tradition.

Thursday morning, Peoples and hundreds of other health education students at Meridian Community College, were sifting through the mountains of information from more than two dozen vendors who were all vying for the services of the new health care students. She said she felt like a kid in a candy store.

"It is exciting to have all these choices," said Peoples. "There are so many places I can go work and so many different places I can go. It is really something."

The MCC Job Fair brings together students and representatives from health care facilities in hopes the two will come together. Annette Rigby, associate degree nursing instructor at MCC, said the vendors came from all over the state and Alabama in hopes of securing the latest and brightest students.

"This is an excellent opportunity for both the student and the health care organization," said Rigby. "Some of the choices even involve the students continuing their health care advanced studies, not just for jobs in the spring."

MCC graduates represent scores of students in both the LPN and RN nursing programs, paramedics, respiratory and physical therapy, radiology, health care and dental assistant, medical lab technician and many more areas. Rigby said about 475 students will take advantage of the morning fair. Rigby said the spring job fair provides these students with an early opportunity to line up job interviews and career paths.

For students such as Peoples, who will graduate this spring, the options are almost overwhelming. But the bottom line is, and this is what she learned from her grandmother who is a retired nurse, it is all about the patients.

"If I can make the difference in one person's life, then this career will have been worth it," said Peoples, as she dropped yet more information into her bag. "I really can't wait to get started."
