Man arrested for attempted armed robbery

MERIDIAN —     A man who police believe attempted to rob a Meridian resident at gunpoint has been arrested and charged.

Meridian Police Department Lt. John Griffith said Friday afternoon the suspect is being held pending his preliminary hearing on a charge of attempted armed robbery. Griffith said the hearing is expected to take place Monday morning.

Griffith said around 9 p.m. Thursday, police were called to an ATM near the gas station at the North Meridian Wal-Mart located on Highway 19 North. When officers arrived Griffith said the victim told officers that while he was attempting to withdraw money from the ATM, a black man approached him. The victim told officers the man had a gun his hand. Griffith said the victim told officers he immediately drove away and called police.

After the victim gave dispatch an accurate description of the suspect, Griffith said patrol officers were able to locate the suspect a short while later and took him into custody without incident.

Griffith said as part of the efforts to ramp up patrols in Meridian police have saturated problem areas in the city.

In a separate incident, Griffith said a man who claimed to have been assaulted and robbed by a white man of his wallet early Friday morning suffered on minor injuries.

A press release from Griffith's office Friday morning said the incident took place about 2:24 a.m. in the 200 block of Highway 11/80. Griffith said this was a strong-armed robbery, meaning no weapon was used in the commission of this alleged crime.
