Shooting reports in Meridian keep police busy

From Staff Reports

More than 30 calls of shots being fired in Meridian over the weekend kept patrol officers and detectives constantly on the move.

According to a press release issued through the office of Meridian Police Department Lt. John Griffith on Monday morning, officers determined the large majority of the calls were unfounded with no evidence of shots being fired found at the reported scenes. But on three occasions, officers did find that two homes and one vehicle were hit by gunfire.

At about 12:04 a.m. Saturday, the release said officers responded to a shooting in the area of 65th Avenue and Old Highway 80 West. The release said when officers arrived on the scene they found a man who claimed someone had fired at least one shot that struck his vehicle. When officers examined the vehicle they found a bullet had apparently struck one of the tires on the vehicle, the release said. The victim told officers he was just driving down the road when a black man fired the shot at him. The victim was not injured by the shot.

The release said at 4:02 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a shooting call at a residence in the 300 block of 63rd Place. The release stated officers, upon arrival, found where the residence had been hit at least one time by gunfire. No one was reported injured during the incident.

The release said at 1:51 a.m. Sunday, the third and final incident that could be backed up by evidence was reported. Police responded to the 500 block of 55th Avenue where they found a residence had been apparently hit by at least two times by bullets fired moments earlier. None of the occupants of the home at the time of the shooting were hit by gunfire.

The release said there were 28 other calls of shots fired within the city limits of Meridian through the weekend. The release said no evidence of gunfire were found at any of the other scenes.

Detectives are actively searching for more clues and those responsible for these incidents. If you have any information pertaining to any of these incidents, or any other crime in Meridian, law enforcement authorities urge you to call Crime Stoppers at 601-485-1860.
