MERIDIAN —     James Weathers will have all his wares on display for the U.S. 11 Antique Alley and Yard Sale next weekend.

He says for those who rummage around the massive, five state event that runs May 16-19 and covers more than 500 miles of U.S. Highway 11 from Meridian to Bristol, Va., there are a great many deals and steals in store.

"You might find one of those one dollar deals that turns out to be a hidden treasure," Weathers, of Russell, says. "Just remember to look over everything you buy real good. If it has a crack on it when you get home, chances are it was cracked when you bought it."

The event will be celebrated in each county up and down the U.S. 11 corridor. Each town along the route will plan its own events, as festivals, antique sales, flea markets and yard sales, carnivals, etc., and many other activities to be held in conjunction with the "Happenin'."

This is an opportunity for folks to do what they like to do best, and that's to get off the interstate highways and take the old roads, said Teresa Haggard Westbrook, who is the East Mississippi/West Alabama coordinator for the event. Especially on a spring weekend, through the scenic Tennessee Valley and the Heart of Dixie. They can shop for treasures, eat great food, join the festivities, or just enjoy the scenery or the friendly folks.

"Beginning in Meridian you can hop onto Highway 11 in front of the Cracker Barrel and shop to your heart's delight," Westbrook said.

Because of the addition of 252 miles in 2002, the days have been expanded to four. Antique dealers, flea market vendors, and yard sale enthusiasts are expected to line the route from Meridian through Birmingham, Ala., Dade County, Ga., and Chattanooga and Knoxville in Tennessee with Bristol, Va., being the end of the event.

Those interested in setting up a space to sell or need more information to plan their shopping trip can call Westbrook at 601-632-0282 or Weathers at 601-483-7127. Or visit the event website online at or on FaceBook at us11antiquealley.
