Suspect escapes police

MERIDIAN —     As of Wednesday afternoon, police were looking for a man who led them on a chase through town, which led to shots being fired a search through a wooded area.

Early on Wednesday, a Meridian police officer attempted to make a traffic stop on an individual near Highway 39 and North Hills Street, according to a statement from Capt. Dean Harper of the Meridian Police Department.

"The subject refused to stop which led to a car chase down 39, across the bypass and ending on 14th Street East where the subject lost control and wrecked his vehicle," Harper said.

The man ran into the woods but even after a lengthy search by several Meridian officers, Highway Patrol Troop H and deputies from the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office, he was able to elude them, Harper said.

During the car chase, shots were fired by a Meridian officer, but no one was injured, according a police report. Asked if the suspect fired on officers, Harper said he could not answer that as the investigation is still ongoing.

A witness to part of the incident said she saw the officer fire at the vehicle, which she described as an older model maroon Suburban.

"That's how close I was. I could see the smoke from the gun. It was awful," she said.

Harper identified the suspect as Saber Clayton Knott, whom Harper said is also suspected of engaging in a scam.

Anyone who knows this individual’s location or believe they may have been a victim of a scam perpetrated by him, are asked to call 601-485-1893, which is the number for MPD's Investigations; or call 601-485-1860, which is CrimeStoppers.
