MSO opens season Saturday

MERIDIAN —     The Meridian Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of the 2013/2014 season is  at 7 p.m. at the MSU Riley Center for the Performing Arts.

Season and individual tickets are available at the Riley Center Box Office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The box office also opens one hour before curtain time the day of the concert.

The first concert is the beginning of the orchestra’s 53rd season of bringing great classical music, pops, family and educational concerts and programs to the community of greater Meridian. This is going to be a spectacular concert as we welcome the new music director, Maestro Peter Rubardt, who has assembled an eclectic program that ranges from Broadway musicals, classics, and modern symphonic music.

The concert will open with a wonderful, energetic composition by Michael Torke for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games called “Javelin.” Following the Torke will be the Haydn “Sinfonia Concertante” featuring four of the MSO principals as an ensemble: Jenny Grégoire (violin), Alexander Russakovsky (cello), Jon Wenberg (bassoon), and Patricia Malone (oboe).

Then a complete change of pace – music from Leonard Bernstein’s exciting Broadway musical “Three Dance Episodes from On the Town.” Then another shift in the mood with Benjamin Britten’s “Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes.” The finale of the evening is Tchaikovsky’s “Capriccio Italien” a rousing piece written while Tchaikovsky was visiting Carnival in Rome.

The evening will begin with a pre-concert gathering at 6 p.m. in room 3C at the Riley Center, where there will be a discussion, information, and surprises about the upcoming concert.

Following the performance, all season ticket holders are invited to the Season Opener After Party at Weidmann’s Restaurant.

Season ticket prices are $120 for all five concerts (five for the price of four) and individual seats are $35 and $25 for adults, and $10 for students and military and military spouses (active or retired).

For more information, call 601-693-2224, or the Riley Center Box Office at 601-696-2200. Visit the MSO online at www.meridianso.org.
